Sue, as she was called by all, married a Wesley J. Maki who, at the time of the marriage, was in the military. They had children, one of which was a daughter, Fay, named after Sue's grandmother, Fay Wells. Sue's daughter, Fay, died at a very young age from Wilm's tumor.

Sue and Wes were separated or divorcing when he came to her home and shot and killed her in a murder/suicide occurrence (He took his own life as well). Sue was in the process of selling the home which they had built. He was described as being retired Navy and a "bad" alcoholic.

Her husband was Wesley John Maki, born 9/29/1934, died 7/4/1991. He was buried on 7/8/1991 in Wood National Cemetery, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is listed as a Viet Nam veteran. He is recorded as having first signed up in the Navy on March 5, 1956. Her Wisconsin death certificate is number 18401; his is 18400.
