1860 Census shows Abner and Jane living with the family of John Vanderhoof. They are not yet married. Abner's occupation is "pudler." Puddling is a significant process in turning cast or raw metal iron intomaleable or wrought iron.A Pudler would work with iron drawn from the furnace to expel the excesscarbon from the iron, stirring, turning and layering it.Once puddled and drwn into bars you would have an iron whch could be"wrought" or made up into iron goods (wrought iron gates)

Dianne -- Thank you for your reply --- this is the same family that lived across the Clinton Brook from my grandfather , in Newfoundland , West Milford Twp. Passaic Co. NJ -- one of the Demouth daughters married Peter D. Vreeland --- the Vreeland and Post families are connected way back thiought the Eckhart Family ------ When I was growing upin the area ( Newfoundland ) - one of the Demouth daughter`s lived in the homestead and had a life right ( lived there with the Freeman Family )but the life-right ended with her and the Freeman family was forced to move out at her death --- the property went back to some heirs and was bought by a member of the Vreeland family ---married Rev. Peter Vreeland 12 NOV 1856
