OREGON’S WISCONSIN COLONY
Mrs. Della Armitage of Neillsville, Wis., arrived in Portland Tuesday morning, June 9, called here by the serious illness of her father, Henry Bealer.
J. C. Martindale and daughter, Viola, Mrs. H. T. Morse and daughter, Lillian and Mrs. Della Armitage drove from Portland to Salem Tuesday to visit the latter’s father, who is very ill in a hospital there.
J. C. Martindale and Mrs. Della Armitage called on Mr and Mrs. John Clark and Clint Tuttle of Woodburn Tuesday afternoon.
S. L. Demouth and wife of Maplewood, J. C. Martindale of Portland and Mrs. Della Armitage autoed to Clatskanie Thursday to see the latter’s ranch, which is located in the hills, five miles south of there.
Word was received in Portland Thursday after that Henry Bealer, formerly of Neillsville, Wis., had passed away at the Salem Hospital that morning. Arrangements have been made to have funeral at Ridgon’s undertaking parlor Saturday and the remains will be laid to rest in the Salem Cemetery.Eva(b. 1863) married Henry Bealar when she was 19. Two years later she had a baby girl, Della. Then, less than two years later she died. I was told that Cordelia and Jacob raised Della after her mother died, however, the 1900 census shows her living with her Aunt Semantha Chase and family. Della grew up and married Willis Armitage. She was the census taker for the 1910 and 1920 census in Clark County, Wisconsin, Weston township. Della and Willis were the parents of Lisle Armitage.
Greenwood Gleaner 3 May 1906: "Willis J. Armitage, wife, and son Lisle, visited at Orlo Robinson’s a few days ago"
acccording to the family tree on ancestry by mayork1 Della was born 1884. If this is so she was a twin to the baby who died. I had her birth from census sources as 1885.
Per 1910 Census - gives initial B. Gives her age as 4 - quite a ways from the 8 she would be if born in 1901 as per SS Death register. Per niece, Darlene Linsmeyer, 18 Mar 2005, birthdate should be 1906.
In 1976 Erma's address was Box 45, Rt 2, Butternut, WI 54514.
She was the custodian of Jacob DeMouth's civil war letters to his wife Cordelia.
In 1983 Heather and I (DZS) visited her in her home on the bank of the Flambeau River. It was a home she had lived in for 60 years. Her husband had died and she lived there all alone. She still mowed the huge lawn herself. She served us a lovely lunch and we sat in her living room and she told us everything she could remember about the DeMouths. Everything in the living room, draperies, upholstery, I think even the carpet, was bright red or pink. Also during this visit we went to the Park Falls bank where she took ggrandpa DeMouth's letters from a safe deposit box and made copies of them for me.
This person is dead.
Marriage Notes for Maxson Monroe and Lucy Janette NUTTING-497
Marriage lisence - Maxson Monroe, of town of Weston, to Mrs. L. J. Martindale, of the same town - 7 Dec 1900 - Clark Co website
1910 Census lists occupation as restaurant manager.
1920 census - Jim and Lillian are managing the Kirby Apt. House at 4297 or 4277 E. Morrison St.
1930 Census show Lillian and daughter Viola w/o Jim living in Portland, working as waitress. For marital status it says "Wa." Don't know what that means. I cannot find Jim in the census, but know from SS record he lived until 1969.
