Per Spencer and Goodpasture: Zolona has been the foremost biographer of Ephraim Derrick and his descendants. She has preserved mnany of the memorabilia of the Derrick family, including the highly valuable family record book in which Ephraim Derrick kept his log of family births, deaths, and marriages.
Derek Greenlee writes "Zolona is an anagram of Alonzo." in an email 9 Aug 2007. And, "My grandmother, Helen Elvira Winters was Zolona's older sister. Grandma just passed about a month ago. We always called Zolona Babe. Zolona's eldest sister Belle was deaf and apparently couldn't say baby and Babe came out. "

Fred made but one visit to his old home in Wisconsin and that was for the purpose of checking the estate left by his father. He returned to California and took up residence in Sacramento. In the 1850 census he was living in El Dorado County, CA. From 1867 to 1884 he lived in Butte County, CA.Per Spencer and Goodpasture Book:
"Fred worked in the lead mines of SW Wisconsin, along with brother Alonzo, for a while after the family first came to Wisconsin."
Also S&G Cites the following notes of Ida Boslow Klumb in 1927 regarding Rodolphus Frederick Derrick:"He came to Wisconsin in the year 1840 with the other members of the family. Indians were very numerous at that time, but quite friendly. Fred formed a decided attachment to them and later concluded to go on a trip with one of them to see the far west. He went among the Crow andBlackfoot Indians and in time became a scout and remained with these tribes for some years.
"Fred married what was said to be a very beautiful squaw whom he loved dearly. She died a short time after their marriage and after a few years, Fred returned to his old home. He was married again to a white girl by the name of Sarah Clark. One daughter, Hatie Clark, was born to them on Jan 9, 1899. Fred took up the business in a merchandise store in partnership with his brother-in-law, Hiram Maynard, who was the husband of Harriet Derrick. Later, Fred moved to California where he lived for several ....
Gene Balis owns a cane which RF Derrick carved while he was with the Indians. It has a mouse hole in the lower end from the time Hattie Balis, his great niece-in-law stuffed it into a mouse hole to keep the mice in. Gene tells about taking the cane to Antiques Road Show, "I took a cane made by my great, great, great uncle when he went west to live with the 'friendly Crow and Blackfoot Indians'. (They were friendly then because they had no idea!)"
