The following came 1 Oct 2006 in an Email from Addy G.
"Al was the son of Paul Gurgurich, who was born on June 21st, 1877 in Croatia (Yugoslavia) -- Paul was born to Michel Gurgurich and Anna Katelan. Al's mother's name was Mary (Mariy), . . . She died in the late 1960's, or early 1970's. . . . We believe the family came in through Ellis Island and settled in Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh area), before eventually moving west and settling in Salem, Oregon. My great grandparents (Paul and Mary) bought a few acres of land in the area, and the house that Al lived in with my grandfather (Ed) and the other brothers (Frank and Paul) still stands on Fabry Rd., in Salem, Oregon. My grandfather, Ed, eventually bought 10 acres just a mile or so down the road, and Al moved out toward Jefferson, OR, buying acres of land, and farming mint. He farmed mint throughout WWII, instead of enlisting and going overseas, or going to college, and ended up becoming quite wealthy from the money he received from his mint farming. From what I had last heard, Ilene still owned much of the land that belonged to Al and Ilene, and for a time, Ilene's family, and eventually Al and Ilene, were one of the biggest landholders in the Jefferson, OR area."
