George Leonard NICKLAS

George became a physician and practiced in Platteville, WI for 20 years until 1915.

In his early 50's George suffered from early senility and had to give up his medical practice.

His wife was unable to care for him, so he was sent to the county Asylum in Lascaster where he died.
I have a photo of G.L. Nicklas as a young man.


George Leonard VONBERG Sr

Leonard was an Iowa farmer per Driskill.


Elizabeth NICKLAS

John and Anna Nicklas's second child was Elizabeth Nicklas, born 13 February 1836 in Blue Ridge, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth grew up and married Leonard VonBerg who was born in Germany.They had one son that was a doctor, and another was a dentist.  The third died in a dormitory fire when he was at college.  They also had two daughters.  Some of their descendants lived in Iowa.


Samenthia VONBERG

This person is dead.

Sophia says Samenthia died young.


Leonard VONBERG Jr.

Sophia wrote that Leonard died young in a fire at college.


John NICKLAS

John and Anna Nicklas's fourth child was John Nicklas, born 26 June 1839 in Monroe County, Illinois.  He married Amelia Kreutz in 1870 in Wisconsin. They had six children, two boys and four girls, with many descendants in Iowa.  Their youngest daughter committed suicide by throwing herself down a well.

In Sept 1918 John is living and farming in Schullsberg, Lafayette Co., WI per WWI draft Registration.

per 1920 census he is single (Nicklos)


Caroline Elizabeth NICKLAS

Caroline was born the day her brother George died.

Caroline committed suicide by throwing herself into a well.


William NICKLAS

John and Anna Nicklas's seventh child was William Nicklas, born 9 February 1847 in Monroe County, Illinois.  He married Emma Schlick in 1876.  They settled in Floyd County, Iowa and had seven children, the youngest of whom was Nicklas family historian, Sophia Nicklas Driskill.  Many of their descendants lived in Iowa.

Vera Cora NICKLAS

Her grave is at Block 12, Section 103, Row 16, Space 6

In the 1922 city directory for Des Moines showed Vera Nicklas as a student in Bible training school. She was about 35 years old at that time.

Vera never married.

She was a Methodist Deaconess for 25 years.

Per Driskill, Vera suffered from Mental illness.

Sophia letter D:  My sister Vera was a Deaconess in Meth. church 25 years. My brother Earl was WWI vet.  He died in Vet hosp.
Both became mentally ill at 65.  Drs. called it Paralona schizophrenia.  Clarence and Blanche were my sister's children.  They also became ill at 65 and lived about 3 yrs.


Earl Harrison NICKLAS

Earl never married.  

Earl was a WWI veteran and an Iowa farmer.

He died in a veterans hospital in Iowa.

per Driskill, he suffered from mental illness.
