Sawyer County Record Jan. 15, 1925
Answers Summons to Great Beyond
Daniel Metcalf of Route One passed to the Great Beyond on Saturday, January 10, from the effects of cancer of the stomach.
Mr. Metcalf was born in Adrian, Seneca County, Ohio, on October 4, 1847.
He enlisted in Co. F., 18th US Infantry on Dec. 11, 1865. Received an honorable discharge on Dec. 11, 1868.
The entire period of Mr. Metcalf's enlistment was spent on the plains escorting wagon trains from one fort to another and guarding forts in Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. William Cody (Buffalo Bill) was their guide most of this time. At this time of Western progress, the US Soldiers were kept very busy because the Sioux Indians were continually on the war path.
The major portion of Mr. Metcalf's enlistment was under Gen. Harry B. Carrington and Gen. Anson Mills.
The most historic battle he was at was the Fetterman Massacre at Fort Phil Kearney the site of which, midway between Sheridan and Buffalo, is marked with a granite monument bearing a bronze tablet dedicated to the memory of Capt. WJ Fetterman and his intrepid band of soldiers massacred there. The Fetterman Massacre was one of the three battles in American history from whose field of courage came no survivor of the vanquished to tell the story of defeat.
On Dec. 21, 1866, in the shadow of the Big Horn Mountains, 83 brave and determined men drove back with fearful slaughter the successive and desperate charges of 3000 of the best warriors of the Sioux nation under their famous chieftain, Red Cloud.
Mr. Metcalf was with the detachment under Capt. Ten Eyck's command sent tot he relief of Capt. Fetterman, but when they arrived on the scene, the massacre was over and the 83 brave men were all killed.
After Mr. Metcalf was discharged he drove mules on supply trains for the government. He herded cattle and drove stage out from Denver, CO, until he came back to peaceful Wisconsin and spent his remaining days rearing his family and for the past fifteen years caring for his invalid wife with all the patience that human tenderness could do.
He returned from the West in 1877 and was married to Sarah S. Turnbull in 1878. To this union eight children were born, seven now living, the oldest, Clarence, died in 1903. James living in Greenwood, WI, Freeman, Asa, William, Thurman, Daniel, and Mrs. Robert Robertson, all of Route One.
The funeral was held Monday from the home, Rev. RJ Barnes officiating. The body was accompanied to the grave by the Hayward American Legion. Interment was made in Greenwood Cemetery.
Those left to mourn his loss are his wife and seven children.
The entire community joins in extending sympathy to the sorrowing relatives.

Mr. Metcalf was born in Massachusetts, and lived for several years in Ohio. He moved to Clark County about fifteen years ago and to Neillsville about a year ago. He was a quiet and peaceable citizen, and had raised a large family of children, several of which now live in Clark County. His first wife died in Hewettville several years ago. His funeral was attended from the Presbyterian Church on Monday afternoon.
Additional information provided by Martin Stewart - mstewart4@woh.rr.com
Nelson Metcalf was born in Massachusetts in 1812, the son of Eliab & Sally (Mallory) Metcalf. He married Eliza Kies, a Connecticut native, in Massachusetts and they were living in Berkshire County, Massachusetts in 1840.
By 1842, the family had relocated to Ohio where the 1850 Brighton Township, Loraine County census shows 38 year old Nelson, 38 year old Eliza, and 7 children. Eli, then 8, was the first Metcalf child born in Ohio. All of this older siblings had been born in Massachusetts.
1860 finds the family in Montgomery Township, Wood County, Ohio where 44 year old Nelson works in a saw mill. Eliza, then 40, and children Ephraim, Eli, Alden, Mary, Daniel, Nelson, and Sarah all remain at home. In the 1860 census, the last name is misspelled "Medriff."
After the Civil War, Nelson, Eliza and the younger children relocated to Allen County, Indiana for a short time and then to Clark County, Wisconsin. The 1870 Pine Valley census finds 59 year old Nelson and 55 year old Eliza engaged in farming. 15 year old Nelson is the only child remaining at home.
On September 1,1874, Nelson secured a land grant from the Government for 120 acres of land in Clark County. Eliza died in Wisconsin on February 5, 1876 at the age of 58. Eliza was buried in the Neillsville City Cemetery in Clark County.
Nelson married again on August 1, 1877 to Angeline Severs, a 24 year old widow who had been married twice before and had at least one small child from her 2nd marriage.
Nelson purchased a blacksmith shop in September 1880 and set up shop in Neillsville, Wis.
Nelson died on April 23, 1882 in Neillsville and was buried alongside Eliza in the Neillsville City Cemetery.
