What is your connection to this family? My great-grandfather Herman Krake was John Krak’s younger brother. Their parents were Adam and Katherine Krak. There were 14 children in this family: John and a brother Adam (who died young) were born in New York; Lena, Katie, Herman, Elizabeth, Annie, Lydia, William, Amanda (died young), and Priscilla were born after the family relocated to Burnside, Lapeer County, Michigan; Mary, Ellen, and Rebecca were born after they moved to Pembina County, North Dakota.

Here’s what I have on John’s children:

Rosa Anna Krak was born on 27 September 1888 in North Dakota. She married Allen Einarson in about 1921. They had at least one son, born about 1928 (possibly still living in California). She died on 3 April 1980 in Los Angeles, at age 91.

Ruben J. Krak was born on 23 June 1890 in North Dakota, and died in August 1974 in Hamilton, North Dakota. He married Irene M. Schluchter in about 1917. They had four daughters, two of whom are now deceased: Mildred Mae (Krak) Apuli (1922-1998) and Ruby L. (Krak) Vistad (1927-2010).

Edna E. Krak was born 19 September 1894, North Dakota. She married Ernest Harry Carlson (1888-1958) about 1920; no known children. She died 9 February 1987, buried in Cavalier Cemetery, North Dakota.

Flossie Eva Krak was born on 6 January 1897 in North Dakota, and died on 14 November 1965 in Los Angeles, California. She married Martin J. Gronos in about 1924. They had two sons, both now deceased: Donald Krake Gronos (1925-2009) and Loren S. Gronos (1928-1980).

Dewey McKinley Krake was born on 12 January 1899 in North Dakota, and died in October 1971 in Oregon City, Clackamas County, Oregon. He married (1) Lucy (2) Jennie, surnames unknown. Appears on voter registration list in Ventura County, California in 1938, but had relocated to Clackamas County, Oregon by the time of his enlistment for WWII. No info regarding children.

Miles Roosevelt A. Krak was born on 26 June 1901 in North Dakota. Pvt Army Air Forces, WWII. Died on 29 July 1975 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Buried in Zion Cemetery, Cavalier, North Dakota. No further info.

Pansy Pearl Katy Krak was born on 13 September 1902 in North Dakota, and died on 20 June 1959 in Red Lake County, Minnesota. She was buried in Cavalier Cemetery near her sister Edna. Her married name was Omvig, but I haven't yet identified her husband."

4Morris H, email, 26 Aug 2015, internet. "Rebecca Elson Steele is supposedly the daughter of George Steele, one of the founders of Hartford.  I’ve had some problems verifying this – for example, she is not listed as a passenger on the ship “Lyon” on which George came to America in 1630.  It could be that babies were not listed – she was born in 1629.

The best verification that George was related to Micah is that he is mentioned in George’s will:

In his will, dated 24 May 1663 and proved 2 March 1664/5, George Steele of Hartford bequeathed to "my dear and loving brother John Steele," 50s.; to "my daughter Elizabeth Wates," "my old mill" and several household objects; to "my grandchild Martha Hanison," best chamber pot; to "Moses and Micah Mudg," 10s. apiece; to "my grandchildren James and Mary Steele," one chest apiece; and to "my dear and loving son James Steele" the residue, he to be executor [ Hartford PD Case #5180; Manwaring 1:239]." It is not proved that Rebecca was indeed a daughter of George Steele.

Message: From the Biographical History of Clark and Jackson Counties, Wisconsin

Joseph L. Barber, of section 10, range 2, Weston Township, Clark County, was born in Essex County, New Jersey, October 10, 1827, the son of John S. and Abigail (Kinneman) Barber, both natives of New Jersey; the former was a shoemaker by trade. They were the parents of eleven children, six of whom still survive. Our subject's grandfather, John S. Barber, was a Hessian, and came to this country to fight against the Americans in the Revolutionary War, but deserted by jumping off a man-of-war, swam to the shore and joined Washington's army, in which he was an officer until the close of the war. His wife cooked many meals for Washington, as the great General made his headquarters at their house while he was in winter quarters near Morristown, New Jersey. She drew a large pension, and died about thirty-five years ago, at the age of ninety-seven years.

The subject of this sketch learned the ship-carpenter's trade, at the age of twenty-two years. He went to Chemung County, New York, where his brothes and sisters still reside. One brother (Abbott) is a wealthy man and a Knight of the Red Cross Mason. Mr. Barber came to Calumet County, Wisconsin, in 1851, where he bought land, but afterward returned to the East, and worked at his trade until 1854. In that year he came again to this State and settled on a farm, which was covered with heavy timber. He was a soldier in the late war, in Company D, Sixteenth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, serving one year, and participated in the battles of Savannah, Fort McAllister and others. His hearing was affected in the army, as was also his heart and lungs, and on account of the two latter, draws a small pension. Mr. Barber came to this county in 1884, settling on his present farm of eighty acres, forty of which is cleared.

He was married in New Jersey, in July, 1847, to Frances Elizabeth Demouth, a native of New Jersey and daughter of John and Maria (Levi) Demouth. Mr. and Mrs. Barber have had eleven children, seven of whom still survive, namely: Hannah, Samantha, Theodore, Joseph, Frank, Lillie and Albert. Hannah married George Smith of Boyd, Chippewa County, Wisconsin, and they have two children-George and Mary. Hannah has a high school education, and has taught seven years. Samanth married Sanford Chase of Jefferson County, New York and they have four children: Joseph S., Edward A., Frances C. and John L. Theodore is principal of the Alma Center School of Jackson County; was married to Flora Mc Carty and has one child-Joseph. Joseph married Sina Fadner, lives in Eau Claire, and has two children-Carl F. and an infant girl. Frank is principal of the Melrose High School, Jackson County, and is a graduate of the Neillsville High School, in both English and German. Lillie is a teacher also. Albert married Alamanz Demouth, resides in Hayton, Calumet County, Wisconsin, and has three children-George A., Lillian and Eva. Mr. Barber is a Mason socially, and politically a Republican. He has held the offices of Supervisor, Assessor, Constable, and Clerk of School Board. Mrs. Barber is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.".

----Mildred Barber (1902 – 29 Sept. 1976)
Born to Dr. Joseph and Ella Barber in Greenwood, a town in central Wisconsin, young Mildred grew up around politics because her father was a state senator. After teaching two years in rural Marathon County, she became her father’s housekeeper at the state capital of Madison. A progressive Republican, she was elected secretary of the state platform committee, and friends soon persuaded her to run for the Wisconsin Assembly. After a vigorous campaign, she won her race by appealing to the party’s liberal wing. Mildred Barber and Joseph Barber thus became the nation’s first father/daughter legislative team.
Her legislative interests initially tracked those of her physician father, including the distribution of iodine to children who lived in areas where that was naturally deficient. As she grew into her own person, though, focus broadened to other issues, including especially prison reform.
Representative Barber made the mistake of not campaigning hard enough in 1926 and lost her reelection. She returned to teaching prior to marrying Otto Abel in 1928. They had one son, and she did not return to public office. Mildred Barber Abel died on September 29, 1976, and was buried in Wausau’s Pine Grove Cemetery.

The State Assembly's First Women Members

Name:  Barber Abel, Mildred   Author: Bill Hart  Background: Mildred Barber was born in Greenwood, Wisconsin on January 9, 1902, the daughter of State Senator Dr. Joseph and Ella (Webb) Barber of Mosinee.  She grew up in a household of politics, often traveling with her father on campaign trips around the state.  In 1924 she was employed as a housekeeper for her father in Madison when she was recruited to become a candidate for the state Assembly.  Just three years earlier, in 1921, women’s suffrage had become law.  She ran a vigorous primary campaign in 1925 as a Progressive and defeated her opponent, a fellow Progressive. At age 23, she held two significant firsts: she became one of Wisconsin’s first three women elected to the state legislature; and, she was the first woman to serve in the Wisconsin Legislature at the same time with her father, a member of the Wisconsin Senate.  It was the first instance of this kind in the United States.  Miss Barber always claimed that she won because her opponent was a Prohibitionist, which was an unpopular stand in Marathon County.          Accomplishments:  When the three women, Miss Barber, Helen Brooks of Wautoma and Helen Thompson of Park Falls, first arrived in Madison to claim their seats in the Legislature, they caused great consternation because the chief clerk of the Assembly did not know how to address them.    Although she served for only one term, Miss Barber was a skillful politician and sponsored several important bills, the first of which was a proposal that the eugenics law be broadened to include women as well as men.  Although it did not pass under her sponsorship, it did pass in the next session.  Another of her proposals was a bill to remove criminal jurisdiction from the justices of the peace to the municipal courts.  Still another example of important bills at that time was the issuance of iodine tablets to school children.  At the time, the state health department fought the bill, but a few years later sponsored a similar bill themselves.  She and her father were appointed by Governor John Blaine to the visiting committee of Penal Institutions.  They were part of a 6-member committee who were to visit all the penal institutions in the state and report their findings.  Years later, she always contended that that appointment was the most interesting role she played as a legislator.  She was also the first woman in the state to attend a platform convention, and was elected secretary of the 1924 Republican Platform Convention.  At the end of her one term, she ran without campaigning and predictably lost.  She was a Progressive Republican like her father, and an admirer of Robert LaFollette, serving as a member of the honor guard at his funeral.  When asked her opinion of LaFollette, she said, “Had Bob LaFollette become president of the United States, our history today undoubtedly would have been much better.” Miss Barber taught school for a year then married Otto Abel on October 31, 1928.  Together they had one son and Mr. Abel had a daughter from a first marriage.  While she never again held a public office, she focused on being a homemaker and she continued with her interest in public affairs.  Mildred Barber Abel died on September 29, 1976.  She is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Wausau, WI.    Occupation: State Assembly Representative."

Joseph L. Barber, of section 10, range 2, Weston Township, Clark County, was born in Essex County, New Jersey, October 10, 1827, the son of John S. and Abigail (Kinneman) Barber, both natives of New Jersey; the former was a shoemaker by trade.
