EDWARD KAYHART, a well known pioneer settler of Sherman Township, of which for many years he has been one of the leading citizens, was born on a farm in Morris County, N. J., Dec. 29, 1846, son of Richard and Elizabeth (Demouth) Kayhart. The parents were also natives of New Jersey. The father, Richard, died when the subject of this sketch was a babe of two years, and the latter subsequently resided with his mother on the farm. He had few educational opportunities, but became acquainted with agricultural work in its different branches, of which knowledge he afterwards made practical use.
In 1869 he came to Clark County, Wis., with Wesley Vanderhoof, and was employed in the construction of the old turnpike road that ran from Neillsville north towards Greenwood. He also spent three winters in the timber woods. In 1875, Mr. Kayhart bought a tract of eighty acres in Section 15, Sherman Township, there being at that time no road in the township. He had then been a married man for five years having been united in Dec. 29, 1870, to Mary Vanderhoof, daughter of Jacob and Jane (Miller) Vanderhoof. In the following year, 1876, he and his wife moved onto the farm, taking up their residence on it in the month of May. It was covered with timber, but no buildings. They built a little log shanty, with a scoop roof, 16 by 24 feet in size, and containing one room, which stood a little west of the present seven-room residence. Later, he built a log house, 16 by 24 feet in size, with four rooms, two downstairs and two up; also a log barn. He has now good barns and other buildings. His first stock was an ox team and one cow, but he now has a herd of good cattle.
Mr. Kayhart added to his farm until he owned five or six hundred acres, but now farms about 150 acres. He has cleared a large amount of land in his day, and has also performed other useful service as the incumbent of local offices, having served on the township board, of which he was chairman for seventeen years, and as township treasurer. He was especially instrumental in having appropriations made for the construction of good roads, which have been of great benefit to the township. Mr. Kayhart was a former shareholder in the Loyal Bank, and is vice president of the Colby Bank. He and his wife have four children: Libbie, now Mrs. Frank Durke, of Sherman Township, and Wilber, Albert and Mamie, residing at home. Mamie is the wife of Harry H. Emling of Osceola, Wis. They have one boy--Norman Edward."4Ancestry.com, Family Tree ofTerry Foss.

Subject: Joseph L. Barber - 1827
Message: From the Biographical History of Clark and Jackson Counties, Wisconsin
Joseph L. Barber, of section 10, range 2, Weston Township, Clark County, was born in Essex County, New Jersey, October 10, 1827, the son of John S. and Abigail (Kinneman) Barber, both natives of New Jersey; the former was a shoemaker by trade. They were the parents of eleven children, six of whom still survive. Our subject's grandfather, John S. Barber, was a Hessian, and came to this country to fight against the Americans in the Revolutionary War, but deserted by jumping off a man-of-war, swam to the shore and joined Washington's army, in which he was an officer until the close of the war. His wife cooked many meals for Washington, as the great General made his headquarters at their house while he was in winter quarters near Morristown, New Jersey. She drew a large pension, and died about thirty-five years ago, at the age of ninety-seven years.
The subject of this sketch learned the ship-carpenter's trade, at the age of twenty-two years. He went to Chemung County, New York, where his brothes and sisters still reside. One brother (Abbott) is a wealthy man and a Knight of the Red Cross Mason. Mr. Barber came to Calumet County, Wisconsin, in 1851, where he bought land, but afterward returned to the East, and worked at his trade until 1854. In that year he came again to this State and settled on a farm, which was covered with heavy timber. He was a soldier in the late war, in Company D, Sixteenth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, serving one year, and participated in the battles of Savannah, Fort McAllister and others. His hearing was affected in the army, as was also his heart and lungs, and on account of the two latter, draws a small pension. Mr. Barber came to this county in 1884, settling on his present farm of eighty acres, forty of which is cleared.
He was married in New Jersey, in July, 1847, to Frances Elizabeth Demouth, a native of New Jersey and daughter of John and Maria (Levi) Demouth. Mr. and Mrs. Barber have had eleven children, seven of whom still survive, namely: Hannah, Samantha, Theodore, Joseph, Frank, Lillie and Albert. Hannah married George Smith of Boyd, Chippewa County, Wisconsin, and they have two children-George and Mary. Hannah has a high school education, and has taught seven years. Samanth married Sanford Chase of Jefferson County, New York and they have four children: Joseph S., Edward A., Frances C. and John L. Theodore is principal of the Alma Center School of Jackson County; was married to Flora Mc Carty and has one child-Joseph. Joseph married Sina Fadner, lives in Eau Claire, and has two children-Carl F. and an infant girl. Frank is principal of the Melrose High School, Jackson County, and is a graduate of the Neillsville High School, in both English and German. Lillie is a teacher also. Albert married Alamanz Demouth, resides in Hayton, Calumet County, Wisconsin, and has three children-George A., Lillian and Eva. Mr. Barber is a Mason socially, and politically a Republican. He has held the offices of Supervisor, Assessor, Constable, and Clerk of School Board. Mrs. Barber is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.".2Clark County Genweb site, http://www.usgennet.org/usa/wi/county/clark. Per fathers Obit posted 15 Oct 2010.

Silkey, Mabel (Marriage - 1925)
A pretty home wedding took place at the home of Mr and Mrs. Henry Koplitz of Withee when their niece, Miss Mabel Silkey of Christie was united in marriage to Mr. Will Lawrence, also of Christie. At five o’clock, while the song “A Perfect Day” was being played on the piano by Lester Koplitz. The bridal couple and their attendants, Mr and Mrs. H. Koplitz, marched through the hall to a bower of powder blue crepe paper flowers in the parlor where the ceremony was performed by Rev. Grandy of Withee.
The bride was daintily attired in a powder blue silk crepe de chine and lace gown, and carried a bridal bouquet of Ophelia roses and Easter lilies, while the groom wore a dark blue serge suit.
Miss Silkey, after finishing the country school, spent most of her time at home, where she became skilled in the art of home making. Mr. Lawrence has worked at the Wiejohn farm at Christie for the past few years and has won many friends by his good nature and geniality. After a brief wedding trip through different parts of the state, the young couple will be at home to their many friends at the Weijohn farm at Christie.
