Eleanor ROSECRANS

1Roger Phillips Email, 20 May 2008. " Eleanor was previously married to "Brow" Scott, who is mentioned notoriously in "Joshua" (I have no further information about him).  She and Brow had a daughter Louisa who married George Hutchinson (or Hutchison); George and Louisa had two two daughters - Mirtia (Murty) who died as an infant and Estella who was last seen on the 1880 census at age 16.  John J. White and wife Eleanor are together on the 1870 census along with George, Louisa and Estella.  The Indian Mound Interment Records has John J. White, Eleanor White, Louisa Hutchinson and Mirtia Hutchinson.  So far I haven't found George Hutchinson or any record of John J. White's first wife.  I've attached below a news clipping for John J. White's estate (Auburn Morning News, Aug 13, 1874) that has a whole bunch of tidbits to analyze later.  I'm still searching for obituaries for all.  Here is a link to Eleanor Rosecran's information on my Nonesuchfolks website (updated as of this morning) http://www.nonesuchfolks.com/TNGP/getperson.php?personID=I293&tree=nsf."

Dear Sir,
Please excuse the liberty I take in addressing a few lines to you a stranger. I have always thought I would like to write to some of my relatives in England. if I only knew who & where to write too and seeing your name annexed to the will of Marion Wilson & thinking perhaps you might be a brother of hers. She was a cousin to my father whos name was Johnathan White, son of John H.[Harris] White who married Hannah Parker of England, they having 12 children, their names were Isabella, Ruth, Mary, Matthew, Jonathan, John, Hannah, Jane, Sarah, Joseph, Issac, Thomas, the youngest & grandma [Hannah Parker] died in England.
[here the transcriber mentions he/she left out 2 pages of the letter]
Aunt Ruth did to I believe. Grandpa [John Harris White] was educated by an uncle that he was named after. his uncle at his death left him a dower after receiving it Jane [White, daughter of John Harris White] married my brother [Coonrod Rosekrans] who resided in Moravia at the time of her death which occurred in 1875 or 76. Sarah married by the name of Brown resided in Wisconsin at the time of her death Joseph married a lady by the name of Putney resided at Cayuga. Thomas married a lady by the name of Whitcomb resides at Cayuga Co. New York. Now I have given you a history of the family. Some 2 or 3 years ago I saw an advertisement in the newspaper for the whereabouts of John W. White who came to this country many years ago. I lost the paper & not knowing who to inform of his whereabouts thinking it might be a reletive out there that wished to know of his whereabouts so I have taken this opportunity to inform them.

her daughter, Mrs. Phebe Mattoon, died at age 37 (1885-86) and husband JW Mattoon then married Abby Houck.
Laurel Auchampaugh [Owasco Town Hisorian] has copy of the letter and gave a copy to Lucinda Abbott Smith.
2nd tidbit. My grandfather Albert Rosecrans told me that when he sold the infamous Hinman Place a few years ago he noticed that either a John or Jonathan White had been a previous owner of some or all of the land. He hadn't made a connection to his grandmother's family until I brought it up.
The 1859 map for Moravia township (Cayuga Co., NY) shows J. White on what is now Hall Rd. across the road from where the Hinman house stood.
Sure enough, when I went back to the 1860 census, I found the family of Jonathan White 45, Julia A. 33, Sarah L. 12, Phebe 11, Clarisa 9 and Albert 7. The ages correspond with dates found on Jonathan White family markers at Indian Mound Cemetery
The 1870 census has Julia A., Sarah L.,Phebe A, Albert P., Chas. W. Metcalf 26 [later married Clarissa]. The next household has John J. White 54 and Elenor 54 - this is likely Jonathan White's brother.
The 1875 map has G. Rosecrans where J. White was in 1859 and Burgess & Hinman across the road where either there wasn't a house or J.M. Thornton lived in 1859.
The 1880 census also has George Rosecrans and Jason Hinman, but no more Whites.
More to come. I've picked up enough information this week to keep me busy until next spring.

5Roger Phillips Email, 31 Mar 2007. "Auburn Argus, October 1, 1897

"In connection with a visit of the venerable Joseph White (aged seventy three) of Nebraska with friends in Niles, Moravia and vicinity, our attention has been called to an ancient relic being a part of a frontispiece of a desk upon which is engraved the date, 1705, being one hundred ninety-two years ago.  The initials I.W. is upon the piece which is made of oak.  The desk formerly belonged to the present Joseph White's great-grandfather and was brought from England in 1836 sixty-one years ago by the family of which Mr. White is a representative.  Handed down from generation to generation only a relic of the desk now remains being owned by Mr. and Mrs. John Hall or Moravia, Mrs. Hall being a lineal descendent of the White family.

"A picnic and reunion as complimentary to Joseph White of Nebraska, (of whose visit to Cayuga County we have previously made a note) was held at the home of a nephew, Horace Rosecrans of West Niles, Thursday, Sept 23d, a goodly number of relatives and friends being present.  Dinner was served at about two o'clock and following the invoking of the Divine Blessing by Mr. White, Julius S. Royce read a response to a toast also a "congratulatory" composed for the occasion.  This reunion occurring upon Mr. White's seventy-third birthday made the occasion doubly interesting.  The birthday anniversary of Mr. Rosecran's mother, Mrs. Conrad Rosecrans, who died twenty-one years ago was upon the same day.  She was Mr. White's sister.  Vocal music was a prominent feature of the occasion.  All present seemed thankful for the opportunity of the day and ere the guests left late in the evening, Mr. White offered up an earnest prayer.  Surely it seemed as if God's blessing had attended the listeners all the day long."."

I've never heard about "the relic" before.  John and Christina ("Aunt Chris") didn't have children and Horace was administrator of her estate (John died in 1926 and Christina died in 1935).  It could be anywhere.

The initials "I.W." could be an interesting find.  I don't have expertise in English genealogy, but Dianne has traced the Whites back to Abraham White and Mary Dawson who where married in 1740.  "I.W." would likely be Abraham's father although technically Abraham was Joseph's great-grandfather.

I found the following item at the Owasco Cayuga Lakes Historical Society in the Rosecrans files. It is a transciption of a letter written by a daughter of Julia Ann Rosecrans White. I'm going to track down the person who has it to see if they have any other information.
This is a copy of a letter that I found in an old trunk in grandad's attic. I shall copy it exactly as it is written.

Dear Sir,
Please excuse the liberty I take in addressing a few lines to you a stranger.
Direct your ans. to Mrs. Phebe Mattoon

New York Box __[illegible]
source: letter written by Julia White (Julia Ann Rosecrans) [This must be an incorrect assumption by the transcriber because the author refers to Jonathan White as her father]
her daughter, Mrs.
Roger Phillips.".

2Burr History and Genealogy, http://www.burrcook.com/history/gates.htm. "Stephen GATES (Stephen) was born in 1640 in Cambridge, Suffolk, MA. He died on 9 Jul 1707 in Acton, Mass

Stephen married Sarah Woodward dau of George and Elizabeth (Hammond) Woodward. of Watertown Mass. They also resided at Stow before settling in Preston, Conn. Stephen married Sarah WOODWARD of Watertown, MA. From HOBART-1912: "Stephen-2 GATES (Stephen-1) married Sarah Woodward, grand-daughter of his step-father, and led a very migratory life. In Boston, where he was living February 17, 1667 [citing Middlesex Deeds 3:262], he was an assistant to Edward Drinker, a potter and Baptist preacher. In 1673 he was of Cambridge, when Drinker deeded to him three hundred acres in the wilderness between lancaster and Concord on both sides of Elizabeth Brook [citing Middlesex Deeds 5:180]. He was of Stow in 1684 when he took an Indian title to the Elizabeth brook property [citing Middlesex Deeds 9:57], and there he and his son Stephen were taxed in 1688. "Of Stow, sick in body, he made his will September 5, 1701, giving his entire farm to his six sons, after the decease of his wife Sarah. Out of the moveable estate _30 was to go to his daughter Sarah and _20 to daughter Rebecca who had received part of her portion since her marriage. Executors: wife Sarah and eldest son Stephen. He [Stephen] died July 9, 1707, and the will was proved September 19, 1707 [citing Middlesex Probate No. 8966]." Stephen GATES and his wife Sarah had eight children: Stephen-3, Simon, Thomas, Isaac, Nathaniel, Sarah, Rebecca and Daniel. Of these, Stephen and Thomas are known to have been at Preston, CT by 1708. I know of no evidence that their father, Stephen, ever lived at Preston; certainly, their uncle, Thomas, had moved to Preston by October 1703."
