4Webb History Update Committee, Webb, Iowa 1900 - 2000. A collection of family stories. ""Harry Woodford Family" by Glen and Pearl Woodford
On a cold wintery day in early March of 1908, an immigrant train pulled into the young town of Webb, bringing the wordly possessions of two young families of the Norwalk, Iowa vicinity.
Harry Woodford and his older brother, Isaac, had each rented farms in the Webb area and had loaded their farm equipment, livestock and household goods on the train and were coming to a new farming area. This immigrant train which was bringing them to Northern Iowa consisted mostly of young families from the southern part of the state. Harry and his eldest son, Glen, age 13, came on the trian to care for the stock. The remainder of the family came later by passenger train.
Harry Woodford and his wife, Kate, had a family of five young children: Glen, Faye, John, Alice and Gaye. Bernerd was born the following year in 1909. They lived on the Charley Allen quarter 2 miles east and 1/2 mile northof Webb where Lyle Williams now lives. Harry had brought a wagon, four work-horses and a young colt, five milk cows, several brood sows, about 200 laying hens, two walking plows, a corn planter and single row cultivator, plus their household furnishings.
The house was a very small four room structure which was enlarged by four additional rooms that spring. The work was done by two carpenters from Marathon who came up and stayed on the job, sleeping in the barn and completing the work in eight days except for the plaster work.
The four older children attended the one room school which was located on the George Speed corner and was taught by Miss Ada Cook.
About 1911 the Garfield Consolidated School was built and the children were bussed over the muddy or dusty roads by horse drawn buses, or by bob sled. The new four room school with full basement was a great improvement over the old one room school even though it too only provided for an eight grade education. Boys in the community old enough to help with the farming attended school only during the winter. The school basement was a delight to the pupils and provided a place for play, such as roller skating and basketball practice in later years.
The Woodford family suffered many hardships and illnesses in those early years, including the smallpox for which they were attended by Dr. Rust. They were in strict quarantine for several weeks.
Across the road west from the house and north of the Abner Stearns house where Wendell Skelton now lives were two large ponds of approximately twenty-five acres each where the Woodford and Stearns boys and girls spent many hours fishing for bullheads. There were several muskrat dens in the marshy ponds so the boys did some trapping too.
In 1913 the family moved to the Detlef Ehrig 240 acre farm located four miles east and two miles north of Webb. They resided there for several years and their twins, a boy and a girl were born in 1916. The twins and the father passed away in the winter of 1919. Glen was stationed in France with the Armed Services at the time but returned home in June to help his mother and younger brothers with farming. In August 1919 he and Pearl Carroll were married but stayed on the farm with his mother for 2 1/2 years until they moved with their young family to a neighboring farm. Mrs. Kate Woodford stayed on the same farm for a few years, then moved into Webb where she lived until her death in 1951.
The children all married boys and girls of the community and lived near Webb for many years. At one time Glen, John, Bernerd and Alice (Mrs. Harley Walker) lived within a mile of each other.
Faye, who married Earl Stearns, died in 1925 leaving two young children.
In March 1939 Glen and his family moved 3 1/2 miles west of Webb where they lived until retirement in 1960 and then moved to Webb and their present home, observing their 50th wedding anniversary in 1969. They have four children: Harry of Greenville, Roydal of Sioux Rapids, Carole (Mrs. Clarence Hammill) of Union, and Beverly (Mrs. Darrell Donaldson) of Marathon.
Bernerd and Irma also moved to a farm west of Webb, in 1940, and lived there until his death in 1972. Irma bought a home in Webb where she now resides. She has a son, Gary, of South Dakota and a daughter, Norma Jean (Mrs. Royal Meyer) of Terril.
Mr. and Mrs. Gaye Woodford and Mr. and Mrs. Harley Walker all live in Ruthven. Mrs. John (Alyce) Woodford lives in the Mallard vicinity; John having passed away in 1972." A collection of family stories compiled by the Webb History Update Committee, entitled
